Bio
Atalaya Handyworks’s owner/operator Andres Javier (“AJ”) Mercado has remodeled, renovated, maintained and repaired homes as a “hobby” for decades and has been involved with several large projects. However, for the last 27 years, his full time employment was as a firefighter and paramedic with Santa Fe City and County Fire Departments. This work allowed him a first hand perspective of home safety issues; everything from fire prevention to fall prevention, senior and child safety. Andres is certified but he National Association of Homebuilders as a Certified Aging In Place Specialist (CAPS).
After retiring as a Battalion Chief in 2024, Andres combined his passion for home and garden esthetics and functionality with his knowledge of how to keep people safe and out of the hospital. He brings professionalism and a service-oriented mentality to Atalaya.
Although the primary motivation behind Atalaya’s work is to prevent the costly (emotionally, medically, and financially ) ramifications of senior falls and fires, we also understand that there is a need for basic, reliable, honest and professional home maintenance and repair.
